Pinch Pot Monster
----Robotic Steampunk Snail
For this project I started with two pinch pot halves of my snail shell. I carved, added coils, and additional clay in order to make the swirl and then carved the inside. For the other side I made a nice pinch pot and then added the gears you see decorating the shell. I rolled out pieces of clay and carved out the shape I desired. I wanted to add emphasis to the body of the snail and pattern with the gears. I did my best to keep the form looking the way I wanted and worked on an overall balance and rhythm with the gears and dots on the body of my steampunk dino snail. As for the glaze I used underglaze and wanted a cold steel and baby blue pallete. some of its pearl grey body didn't get fully covered but it ended up looking like rusted metal!
Natural form Coil
Fruit Bowl Dragon
This is my organic coil project. I decided to go with a longer shape to make a fruit holder instead of a tall pot so a dragon suited this. I decorated its body with coils and carefully added characteristics of a dragon to this fruit bowl. This dragon proved quite difficult due to its size and transportation logistics. Upon firing and attempting to glaze I sadly, added clear coat on a base of bucket glazes so I had to start over. The glaze was starting to crack quite heavily so I decided not to add a third layer of glaze but sadly this caused to not be glazed fully. Upon firing one of the scales on the side of the body broke of and there was a crack on the other side and bottom. I added some lines to mimic the stomach of a dragon and added many layers of white to the mouth and eyes topped with red. This didn't shine through however. I hope to use this to hold lemons and limes for the kitchen.
Architecture Slab Project
Fishy Arc
Initially I wanted to make a cathedral dome with little box houses coming out to work as a cave for my fish. However due to time restraints and logistics of the cardboard model. I decided to base my architecture slab project on the arcs of Guadalajara. I have seen and drove under these arcs many times but decided to make only one of the arcs. I decided this project would be a perfect little arc for my fish. so i added some fish tank characteristics. bubbles that evoke rhythm and mimic bubbles of the filter. Seaweed made by subtraction of clay. Swirls that mimic snails, and two fish in the middle looking at each other. With the use of color I think this will make a great addition to the fish tank.
Wheel Thrown Pot
Plate and Tea Cup
Wheel Throwing was probably the most difficult project for me. In all the others time and fun designs could get you by and where the main attributes. As for the wheel throwing the skill was completely new and was quite frustrating at the beginning. I enjoyed trimming the pots a lot but felt one wrong move could drastically abolish the piece. I had fun glazing this piece I wish I could have spent more time practicing wheel throwing to better make what I was hoping to accomplish. I made one pot and then a tea cup and plate set. I used white yellow and blues for the tea cup and plate and browns for the pot.
Korean Water Dropper
Skull with horns
I was struggling deciding what to make with this assignment. I had lots of clay left over so I made a big skull water dropper. I glazed it all white and used reference photos to better get the realistic factor of a human skull. I added horns for interest one broken and one good horn. I really like how it turned out. I'm a bit sad the horns did not turn out perfectly symmetrical but am happy with the overall look of it.
